about

‘Soul Fugue’ is an epic battle between two armies. One army is voiced by the brass section of the orchestra on the left side, and the other by the woodwind section on the right.
Harmonically, it is built on a pattern in which three chords cycle twice over three measures: Db Eb; Gb Db; Eb Gb. This recurs thirty-three times before the final measure, totalling one hundred measures in celebration of Daptone‘s 100th 45rpm release. At 80 bpm, in 4/4 time, the piece is precisely five minutes long, the maximum duration of a seven-inch record cut at 45 rpm at optimum cutting amplitude.
The introduction of themes and the climactic passages occur precisely at measures that coincide with “golden ratios” within the dimensions of the piece. The “golden ratio”, also known as the “divine proportion” is a ratio found in nature, often employed in architecture and design for it’s naturally gratifying aesthetic equilibrium. It occurs when the ratio of a smaller part to a bigger part is the same as that of the bigger part to the sum of both. Eg. A/B = B/(A+B), or numerically, 1:1.61803... For example, if one were to divide ‘Soul Fugue’’s one hundred measures by this ratio, one would arrive at measure 61, where the lead trumpet first plays the main theme. The ratio of the subsequent 38 measures to the previous 61 measures is equal to the ratio of those 61 measures to the total 100, and thus “golden”. Such occurrences can be notated as M61[G1-100], meaning “Measure 61, occuring at a golden ratio between notable measures 1 and 100.”
There are two main motif’s in the piece. The first is a call to arms, a long cry followed by a descending run, introduced by the lead alto saxophone in M13[G1-22], and subsequently taken up by growing numbers of brass and woodwinds, climaxing en masse in M22[G1-37]. In M28[G1-46], the piece breaks down to a pianissimo section with the brass playing a nine measure figure that weaves over itself thrice in counterpoint, creating the slowly swelling chordal foundation for the flute and piccolo which enter over a distant march in M37[G1-61] with the debut of the primary motif. A section marked by three strong 1/8 notes begins triumphantly at M46, in which the alto saxophone again plays the call to arms M49[G28-61], heralding in a spirited duel between the two trap kits M52[37-61].
The motific zenith of the piece is the section beginning at M61[G1-100] with the main theme taken at last by the lead trumpet. The alto saxophone’s penultimate call to arms at M67[G13-100] (marking the Golden measure between the call’s first appearance and it’s final conclusion) leads the full alto saxophone section into the main theme in M70. At M73, the trumpet section piles on in round, only to be bested again by the altos jumping the octave in M76. At M78[G61-88] the section climaxes as the trumpets find the saxophones in unison for the final row, the entire ensemble joining for the line’s ultimate descent. The closing section is a building rhythmic figure beginning at M88. The alto’s call at M94[G88-99] signals the final crescendo of the piece and the death knell of the timpani in M100. There are no survivors.
